Muscat – Oman is set to launch three rockets in 2025, building on the success of its first experimental rocket, Duqm-1, according to Dr Saoud al Shoaili, Director General and Head of National Space Programme at Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Shoaili said, “Oman is ready to drive innovation and technological development regionally and internationally. These upcoming launches are part of our efforts to support scientific research and expand our capabilities in space exploration.”
The planned missions aim to enhance Oman’s contribution to the global scientific community by advancing research in environmental studies, communications and space technology. The launches are expected to bolster the sultanate’s reputation as a key player in the global space industry while fostering innovation in space technologies.
Duqm-1, Oman’s first experimental rocket, was launched successfully through a collaboration with Etlaq, a company under National Space Services Company (NASCOM). Measuring 6.5m in length and weighing 123kg when fuelled, the rocket was developed with strict adherence to environmental and safety standards. Coordination with Environment Authority ensured that terrestrial and marine ecosystems were protected throughout its development and launch.
The Duqm-1 project involved 15 Omani engineers and technicians, who gained valuable experience in the space industry. While the rocket components were manufactured abroad, assembly took place locally, reflecting Oman’s efforts to transfer and localise advanced technologies.
Shoaili described the project as a catalyst for growth of the sultanate’s space sector. “It positioned Oman on the global space map and showcased our readiness for future endeavours. It also showed prospects of investment, job creation and technological advancement in the sultanate.”
Oman’s National Space Programme has facilitated international collaborations bringing cutting-edge technologies to the sultanate. Recent discussions with delegations from various countries have explored opportunities for future projects, reinforcing Oman’s commitment to becoming a significant player in space exploration.
Oman’s rockets project began in January 2023 with the signing of a usufruct agreement for a launch site. Since then, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has worked closely with national entities such as Ministry of Defence, Civil Aviation Authority, and Environment Authority, as well as international organisations.
Neighbouring countries are informed of launch plans as a precautionary measure.
Duqm-1 rocket and upcoming launches set the pace for Oman’s ambitious plans for space exploration, as the sultanate seeks to attract local and international investments, create jobs and position itself at the forefront of space exploration in the region.
